A short history of Riihimäki Glass
Riihimäki Glass, or Riihimäen lasi as it’s called in Finnish, was founded in 1910 in the Finnish town of Riihimäki near Helsinki by Mikko Adolf Kohlemainen. The company produced many different glass items ranging from everyday household glassware like dishes or vases to more ornamental art glass.
Throughout the years, Riihimäki Glass produced a range of different glass designs and sets by various designers who are recognized as vanguards of Nordic vintage like Timo Sarpaneva or Gunnel Nyman.
Production of art glass and cut glass items was stopped in the 1970s after which the company only produced machine produced glass and plastic packaging. The glass company was bought by Ahlstrom Corporation in 1980 and eventually shut down in 1990. The legacy of Riihimäki Glass is nonetheless still alive today and the name is instantly recognized among fans of the Nordic vintage style.
Due to the fact that most of the highly regarded glass items were only produced until the 1970s, Riihimäki glass is considered a valuable brand among collectors.
